Detroit Tigers edge Boston Red Sox 3-2 – MLB Regular Season
Detroit Tigers defeated Boston Red Sox 3-2 at the Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan on Thursday, April 5 in their regular season encounter of the 2012 Major League Baseball. The Tigers will be very pleased to start their 2012 regular season campaign with
a win over one of the strongest teams in American League Central division.
Tigers’ ace Justin Verlander showed why he won the 2011 American League Most Valuable Players award as he had a brilliant time on the mound. Prince Fielder, who was acquired for the fourth largest contract in MLB history, also drove in key runs and the Tigers
edged past the Red Sox to win their opener on Thursday afternoon.
Austin Jackson made a valuable contribution in the bottom of the ninth inning to help his team clinch a thriller. Manager Jim Leyland was absolutely delighted with his team’s effort in a nail biting finish.
"I get the strikeout questions a lot, but it doesn't bother me. I understand," said Jackson, who fanned 351 times in his first two big league seasons. "I stayed with the approach as far as just putting the ball in play, and it worked out."
"That always helps -- getting a hit the first at-bat," Fielder said. "Whenever you can get that out of the way, you can relax a little bit."
Many of the National writers have declared the Tigers as the favourites to win the World Series finals this season. Considering their fans’ expectations, there will be immense pressure on the Tigers this year. But the Tigers have been training hard to deal
with this kind of pressure since the offseason and it will be interesting to see if they can live up to the hype surrounding them to make their dreams come true.
The Red Sox, on the other hand, will be disappointed to lose the game that was played on an extremely competitive note. Showing great composure and mental strength, the Red Sox managed to stay in the hunt for most part of the contest. However, they were
outplayed by the Tigers in some finer details of the game.
