Detroit Tigers edge Chicago Cubs 5-3 in series finale – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers finally managed to win two in a row as they edged Chicago Cubs 5-3 at Wrigley Field in Chicago, Illinois on Thursday, June 14 in the finale of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Chicago had showed some great baseball skills in series opener to secure a narrow win. Pressure was on Tigers’ manager Jim Leyland and his men to bounce back strongly in the second game.
The Tigers did not disappoint their fans as they secured a comfortable 8-4 win to keep the series alive. Credit must be given to them for edging out Chicago Cubs in a game that was played on a very fighting note.
Prince Fielder proved to be productive on the plate as he doubled to left in the first inning to give the Tigers a crucial 1-0 lead. Ryan Raburn had an RBI double to deep right centre in the second inning to double Tigers’ advantage to 2-0.
"We've got to start winning two out of three," manager Jim Leyland said.
"It's a lot more fun when you hear all the fans chanting 'Let's go Tigers' on the road," Jackson said.
"After the second I started getting my rhythm a little bit," Verlander said. "I started throwing my breaking ball for strikes. Keeping guys off balance and just making better pitches."
"He kind of stays on you the whole time," Cubs Tony Campana said of Verlander who now has six wins to his name this season. "He mixes his pitches so well and that's why he's so good."
Darwin Barney doubled to deep left in the second inning to bring the Cubs back into the contest but the Tigers continued their assault with Austin Jackson securing an RBI single to left in the seventh and he homered to left in the ninth to give the Tigers complete control of the situation, leading the score at 5-2.
2011 American League most Valuable Player Justin Verlander struck out eight, displaying top quality throwing skills. Allowing just two runs in eight solid innings, he played a key role in deciding the outcome of the game.
