Detroit Tigers edge Minnesota Twins 4-3 to complete series sweep – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers continued to show signs of improvement as they beat Minnesota Twins 4-3 at Target Field in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Sunday, May 27 in the finale of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Miguel Cabrera played a key role in deciding the outcome of the clash as he hit a two run home run to let his side secure a thrilling win.
With their win, the Tigers improved their record to 23-24 and it will be exciting to see if they can take their excellent form into their next series against Boston Red Sox to get over the .500 win percentage barrier.
Hard hitting Cabrera singled to right in the first inning to put the Tigers 1-0 ahead. Brennan Boesch also made the most of available opportunities as he grounded into double play to give his side a crucial 2-0 lead.
Alexi Casilla, Joe Mauer and Josh Willingham helped the Twins fight back in the fourth and the fifth but credit should go to Cabrera who homered to centre in the bottom of the ninth to let the Tigers come back from behind to snatch an impressive win.
"We're here to win games, not here for personal numbers," Cabrera said after putting up a game winning performance for his team. "If you think about that, you put pressure on yourself."
"That's all I'm looking to come out there and do: Keep us in the game and try to pitch as deep as I can. In that way, it was a good outing," Starting pitcher Ricky Porcello said in a post game interview. "Obviously I've got to continue to work on putting
it all together, but it's a good win for us."
Manager Jim Leyland will be extremely satisfied with the result of the series. Detroit needed this series sweep badly after blowing away a large number of opportunities earlier this season that damaged their win-loss record quite significantly.
The fans will also be very pleased to see the offence living up to their immense potential. After all, the Tigers have some of the best hitters in their batting lineup.
