Detroit Tigers edge St. Louis Cardinals 2-1 in series finale – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers edged St. Louis Cardinals 2-1 at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan on Thursday, June 21 in the finale of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Leyland will be very impressed with what he saw from another youngster; Jacob Turner. Tigers’ starting pitcher Turner pitched with great control and accuracy in his first start of the season.
Allowing just one runs and four hits in five innings, he played a key role in deciding the outcome of the clash. Turner will be hoping to bring more variety into his pitches to lead the Tigers to their second straight AL Central Division title.
First baseman Prince Fielder hit his 11th home run of the season in the fourth inning to put the Tigers 1-0 ahead. Matt Holliday hit a sacrifice fly to right in the fifth to level score for the Cardinals.
Youngster Quintin Berry continued to impress the skipper as he drove in a tie breaking single in the tenth inning to secure a much needed victory for his side.
"I've never had a walk-off before," the Detroit outfielder Berry said. "I showed it out there, jumping around, acting crazy. You don't know what to do with yourself."
"They gave me a good shot, but it's the best feeling you could get, being ripped up a little bit," Berry added. "I'll let them do it every day."
"He did fine. I will say this: He's much improved," Detroit manager Jim Leyland said. "There's no question about that. He's much improved from the last time I saw him, particularly at the big league level."
The win will be of great importance for the Tigers who are now just one game behind the .500 win percentage mark. Credit must be given to Jim Leyland and company for making a strong comeback over the last couple of weeks.
The Tigers are now just two games behind the American League Central Division leaders Cleveland Indians and it will be interesting to see if they can replace the Indians at the top of the table before the All Star Break.
