Detroit Tigers edge out Cleveland Indians 9-6 – MLB Update
Wilson Betemit hit a home run on Tuesday, September 27 to help the Detroit Tigers edge past the Cleveland Indians 9-6 at Comerica Park.
Betemit’s performance was a source of immediate relief for the team as he was recently consigned to DL list owing to knee soreness.
Having not played any game since the 16th of this month, Betemit made an emphatic announcement of his return with the huge 423-foot home-run. This comes at a time when the team manager Jim Leyland had expressed his worry about Betemit’s injury.
Max Scherzer of the Detroit Tigers allowed four runs in his 5.2 innings, having given up seven hits with an ERA of 4.43. Jeanmar Gomez of the Cleveland Indians proved costly for the team with eight runs that he gave up, allowing 10 hits in merely 4.2 innings
with an ERA of 4.47. This was Gomez’s first defeat in the last six games, as he won five in row.
Delmon Young hit a single and Magglio Ordonez snapped in a two-run single to give the team an early 3-0 lead in the game only to be followed by Wilson Betemit’s homer to right, allowing the team to secure a decent 4-0 lead.
Young hit another homer in the fourth to take the lead to 6-1 after Shelley Duncan scored the first run for the Indians. Magglio Ordonez and Ryan Raburn drove in a single each to take the lead to 8-2 by the time the fifth came to end with Jason Kipnis scoring
the second run for the Indians.
Jason Donald hit a two-run single to centre against Max Scherzer to bring the lead down to 8-2. However, that did not last long as Miguel Cabrera hit another homer in the sixth inning to take the Tigers’ lead to 9-4.
Jim Thome and Lonnie Chisenhall’s single helped put up resistance against the Tigers, but could not move beyond 9-6 as Jose Valverde had his 48th save of the season with a shut-out ninth inning that he pitched, helping the Tigers win the game
9-6.
