Detroit Tigers edge past Boston Red Sox 4-3 – MLB News
Detroit Tigers held their nerves under pressure as they secured a narrow 4-3 win against the in-form Boston Red Sox at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan on Thursday, June 20 in the opening game of their four match series of the 2013 Major League Baseball regular season.
Tigers used their home conditions to great effect in a game that was played on an extremely competitive note. The crowd cheered for the home side at Comerica Park and the Tigers did not let their fans downs, showing great courage and mental strength to prevail in a thriller.
Starting pitcher Jose Alvarez showed the stuff he is capable of as he helped his side grab an important win against the American League East Division leaders. Overall, the right hander gave up just five hits and two runs in five solid innings to keep side in the hunt. However, Drew Smyly was the star of the show after he allowed just a hit in two scoreless innings of relief to claim his third straight win of the season. Relief pitcher Phil Coke and Luke Putkonen also made useful contributions on the mound.
"I don't try to hit a home run, but I try to have good contact with the ball," Peralta said. "That's what happened when I had good contact."
"Yes, I think so," Farrell said when asked if he'll look at other options to close out games. "That might be backing him out of that [role] to get him some work to get on track a little more. We'll talk more about that internally, about making a potential change."
For the Red Sox, John Lackey produced another magical performance, allowing just two runs in seven solid innings but he was unlucky to end up on the losing side. David Ortiz smacked a solo home run to right in the fourth inning to put his side on the board. Jacoby Ellsbury singled to centre in the fifth to double the lead to 2-0 but the Tigers fought back superbly. Torii Hunter singled to right in the fifth and Jhonny Peralta hit a two run home run to help Detroit come back from behind for a thrilling win.
