Detroit Tigers edge past Boston Red Sox 7-5 – MLB news
Detroit Tigers held their nerves to prevail 7-5 in a thrilling encounter against the Boston Red Sox at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan on Sunday, June 23 in Game 4 of their four match series of the 2013 Major League Baseball regular season.
A lot of credit should be given to the Tigers for using their home conditions to perfection in a game that was played on quite a competitive note. Starting pitcher Justin Verlander had a decent time on the mound as he allowed just seven hits and four runs
in five solid innings to lay the foundation of an impressive win for his team. However, the star of the show was Joaquin Benoit who held his nerves to throw 1.1 innings scoreless innings of relief to improve his record to 2-0.
Relief pitcher Drew Smyly also made his presence felt as he allowed just three hits in 2.2 effective innings. Miguel Cabrera provided the Tigers with a perfect start as he hit a ground rule double to deep centre in the first inning to put his side on the
board. Prince Fielder also drove in a crucial run in the first to double Tigers’ lead to 2-0.
“To have a catch, you have to have complete control and voluntary release,” said crew chief Ted Barrett, the third base umpire. “(DiMuro) had him with control, but did not have the voluntary release. When he flipped the ball out of his glove, he never got
it into his hand. That's not voluntary release.”
“When you spend the rest of the game in the clubhouse, you probably have a difference of opinion,” Farrell said. “Clearly, the call was missed. He caught it, he went to transfer to his throwing hand, dropped it at that point.”
Jhonny Peralta, Torii Hunter and Fielder showed nerves of steel under pressure as they combined to score four runs in the seventh and the eighth as the Tigers came back from behind for a thrilling victory. For the Red Sox, starter Felix Doubront conceded
just four hits and three run in five innings but ended up on the losing side.
