Detroit Tigers edge past Kansas City Royals 3-2 – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers edged past Kansas City Royals 3-2 at the Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri on Monday, April 16 in their regular season encounter of the 2012 Major League Baseball.
Tigers’ Manager Jim Leyland will be extremely happy with the way his men carried themselves since the start of this season. With seven wins in ten games, it seems things are working out quite well for the Tigers up till now.
On paper, the Tigers are one of the strongest teams in American League. However, Leyland and his men have already shown the baseball world that they can actually go on to win the World Series finals. In Justin Verlander, the Tigers have one of the best pitchers
in American League.
Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder are two of the most dangerous hitters in the league. It should not be a surprise to anyone if Tigers’ walk to the playoffs turns out to be a piece of cake.
Verlander once again showed his class as he put up some solid numbers. The starter struggled a bit in the ninth inning but he controlled his nerves effortlessly to help the Tigers clinch a thriller 3-2. Verlander had allowed four runs in just over eight
innings in his previous so he will be very happy to live to his skippers’ expectations this game.
"He came in after the eighth and said, 'I feel great,' " Leyland said. "I said, 'Well, it's your game. You're either going to win it or lose it. I'm not taking you out.' "
"It was a big task facing Verlander," said Royals manager Ned Yost, whose club has lost five straight. "We gave him a good game, but it's not the way we wanted it to end."
The biggest problem for the Royals this season has been their inability to play their natural game under pressure. They had plenty of opportunity to take the lead during the contest but lack of confidence halted their progress in a number of ways. Kansas
City, who has a poor 3-7 record, will be looking to work hard on their strategy to change the course of their campaign.
