Detroit Tigers edge past Texas Rangers 7-5 in Game 5 of ALCS – MLB Playoffs
The Detroit Tigers edge past Texas Rangers 7-5 in Game 5 on Thursday, October 13 at Comerica Park in Detroit and cut the Rangers’ lead 3-2 in the American League Championship Series.
Tigers’ Justin Verlander showed some impressive performance down the stretch with a double play and helped his team sneak away with a terrific victory. He allowed just four runs, eight hits in just over seven innings as he tossed career high 133 pitches.
Verlander, who played a key role in Tigers’ win, also spoke to the media after the game and described how anxious he was to win this game for his team. He said, “I want the ball. I want to go as deep as possible, it was a battle for me, all night.”
After the game, Texas manager Ron Washington spoke to the media and tried to explain why his team could not come out as victorious. He said, “We had him right there in the sixth."
The Tigers started well and opened up a five run gap at the bottom of the sixth inning. Though, the Rangers’ Nelson Cruz showed some resilience with his record fifth home-run of the series at the top of eighth inning, but the Tigers held on to win the game
7-5 in the ninth.
Detroit did not give any loop holes to the Rangers and kept the pressure on. Phil Coke performed tremendously and retired Mike Napoli with his astounding pitching. He got a total of five outs in the game.
Phil Coke’s manager Jim Leyland also appreciated his fantastic performance when he said, “Cokie came through for us, A little different situation for him obviously, but he was up to the challenge.”
Despite the defeat, the Rangers still have another chance in Game 6 on Friday, October 14 to make it into the World Series Championship for the second straight time in two years. The team will look to come out with a positive attitude and try to dominate
the next game early.
