Detroit Tigers expecting high from their ace Justin Verlander – MLB News
Justin Verlander will have a lot to prove in the upcoming 2012 season. He pitched out of his skin in 2011 as he won the American League Most Valuable Player award. His 24 wins, 250 strikeouts and 2.40 ERA suggest the level he raised his game to the past
season. However, it will be tough task for him to post similar stats this season.
Undoubtedly, Verlander is one of the most effective starters in the game right now but what makes him a special player to have in the team is his ability to perform under pressure. His Cy Young award or the MVP award are history now. He will be looking forward
to the upcoming season now. While it may not possible for the starter to win another MVP or Pitching Triple Crown award, he can certainly become a better pitcher by bringing more improvement in his throwing technique.
"I'm learning," he said. "I think I'm starting to get a little bit older and less just ... over competitive. Start to channel it toward things that will help me succeed in this game. I think I got better at that last year."
"I've thought it might not be good for my stress level," he said. "My blood pressure is good. I had it checked the other day. I'm not worried about it, man. That's just the way I was born. My parents said I was that way since they can remember. That's just
me."
For Verlander, playing baseball is more important than anything else in his life. He puts his pitching responsibilities ahead of other aspects of his life. He always looks determined and energetic on the field. However, the big question is if he can direct
all that energy into the right direction in 2012.
Verlander is durable and reliable and he hardly misses any games due to injuries or other health problems. He looks after his health and blood pressure. The Tigers will expect him to perform consistently during the regular season to help them achieve their
desired goals. It will be exciting to see if Verlander can post another MVP level season.
