Detroit Tigers fail offensively but upbeat for comeback in ALCS – MLB Update
The Detroit Tigers failed on the offensive front yet again, falling to Texas Rangers 3-7 in Game 2 of the American League Championship Series on Monday, October 10 at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, Texas.
Earlier, the Tigers were edged out 2-3 in Game 1 and lost star slugger Magglio Ordonez to an ankle injury. With the series now shifting to Detroit, the Rangers have a commanding 2-0 lead in the seven-game series and a comeback from this position seems to
be a distant possibility.
Detroit’s manager Jim Leyland expressed disappointment on the outcome of this game and said, "We didn't quite get it done. We haven't been able to come up with any big hits. That's really hard. We've had some opportunities, but up to this point, we just
haven't been able to do that."
The Tigers stranded nine runners on base in Game 1 and went a step ahead in this one, leaving 13 on base and failing to convert these chances. Miguel Cabrera, however, praised Rangers’ bull-pen and stated that the pitchers made it count when their team needed
it.
With Delmon Young fighting an oblique injury and Ordonez out for a good part of the next season as well, Detroit’s offence presented a dull picture. Ryan Raburn was the only highlight of Detroit’s line-up, hitting a three-run homer in the third inning for
the visitors to bag a one-run lead after the Rangers had posted two runs in the first inning.
Designated Hitter Victor Martinez failed to connect in his four at-bats to increase misery for the Tigers. However, he was not concerned about this failure and said, "Unfortunately, we end up on the losing side, but ... we're going home. We've been doing
it the whole season: turn the page, come back tomorrow and keep on going."
Martinez further added that both games were close encounters and could have gone either way.
Raburn remained adamant that the team will fight hard to stage a comeback in the series, however, historically speaking, only three teams have been able to comeback from a 0-2 deficit and this percentage is not encouraging.
The Tigers will now take on the Rangers on Tuesday, October 11 at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan.
