Detroit Tigers feeling the heat after suffering series sweep to Seattle Mariners – MLB News
After making a bright start to their 2012 Major League Baseball regular season campaign, it seems the Tigers are losing their way now. Prior to their series against Seattle Mariners, Tigers were 10-6 in their sixteen games. However, having suffered their
first series sweep of the season to the Mariners, the panic button must have been pressed within Detroit’s camp.
The GM Dave Dombrowski could send Thad Weber to Triple A league in Toledo and he is given hints on calling up right hander Luke Putkonen to strengthen Tigers’ pitching attack. The 26 year old Luke has an impressive 1.38 ERA in 13 innings in the minor league
this season and it will be interesting to see if he can do the same in Majors.
"We're in a spot where, today, Weber's not going to be able to pitch today," Dombrowski said. "Putkonen could pitch for us."
"He's thrown the ball very well for us in Triple-A," he further added. "We think he can help us in the bullpen."
Unable to handle the pressure, the Tigers made too many unforced errors in their three game series with the Mariners at the Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan.
GM Dombrowski will be very depressed with what he has seen in his teams’ last seven outings with Tigers losing six of them. The Mariners humiliated the Tigers 9-1 in the second game and they continued their domination in the finale.
Manager Jim Leyland and Dombrowski made some expensive moves earlier this season to power Tigers’ offensive and defensive line-ups but right now it seems the skipper may not get a good return on their investments.
Prince Fielder, who was signed for the fourth largest contract in history of the game, has not been able to live to his immense potential since the start of the season. Fielder had an absolutely great time on the plate with Milwaukee Brewers but he is wasting
too many opportunities at the Comerica Park.
Miguel Cabrera has taken some responsibility, hitting his sixth home run of the season on Thursday, April 26 but he will need support from other batters if the Tigers want to progress to the World Series finals.
