Detroit Tigers flatten Minnesota Twins 7-3 to draw series – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers drew series with Minnesota Twins 2-2 with a 7-3 win at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan on Thursday, July 5 in the finale of their four match series.
Manager Jim Leyland was disappointed with what he saw from the Tigers’ starting pitcher Rick Porcello, who gave up 12 hits and three runs in just over three innings. His poor performance on Thursday afternoon raised his ERA to 4.47 and it will be interesting
to see if he can build on some much needed confidence before his next appearance.
Relief pitcher Darin Downs and Octavio Dotel helped the Tigers stay in the game. Downs pitched three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit with five strike-outs. Dotel gave up just a hit in 1.1 inning as the Tigers fought back to stay within touching
distance of American League Central Division leaders Chicago White Sox.
Taking complete advantage of Porcello’s wavered pitching, the Twins raced to a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning. It was Miguel Cabrera who put the Tigers on the board with an RBI single to left. Brennan Boesch continued his excellent hitting form as he doubled
to deep-centre to cut Twins’ lead to 3-2.
"It's exciting. ... Miguel took a lot of the pressure off. I can't say enough about the way he played today," said Fielder about Cabrera. "Like I said, I'm just glad those three guys in the eighth there really set the tone."
"Just hung a slider to him (Fielder), and he did with it what he's supposed to do," Twins’ relief pitcher Tyler Robertson said. "It wasn't good pitch . . . That happens when you don't make pitches."
Prince Fielder showed just why he has been selected for the Home Run Derby as he homered to right in the eighth inning to put the Tigers 6-3 ahead and Delmon Young added a solo home-run to right in the eighth to wrap up an impressive Tigers’ victory.
Twins’ starting pitcher Scott Diamond gave up just two runs and five hits in seven solid innings but despite his heroic effort, Minnesota ended up on the losing side.
