Detroit Tigers fought back 8-4 to level series against Chicago Cubs – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers fought back 8-4 to level series against Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field in Chicago, Illinois on Wednesday, June 13 in the second game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
In some ways, it was a huge win for Jim Leyland and company, who have now improved their record to 29-33.
If the Tigers can somehow maintain their impressive form over the next couple of weeks, they will have an excellent chance to get past the .500 win percentage hurdle before the All Star Break.
With the kind of start they had made to their 2012 regular season campaign, the Tigers were expected to stay at the top of American League Central Division standings for most part of the season but that has not turned out to be the case with Tigers five
games behind the league leaders Chicago White Sox.
Roman Santiago provided the Tigers with an excellent start as he grounded out to second in the second inning to put his side 1-0 ahead. The Cubs responded immediately and Bryan LaHair earned an RBI double to deep left centre in the fifth to extend Chicago’s
lead to 4-1.
"It's all about winning series," said catcher Gerald Laird after the Tigers' 8-4 victory. "It's hard to sweep teams. If you win series, you can see yourself atop your division."
"It was pretty cool, especially when you hear it's a brick wall behind that ivy and you've got to be careful running full speed," Jackson said. "I was able to brace myself a little bit at the end, so I didn't get the full effect of the brick wall."
Delmon Young singled to right in the sixth to bring the Tigers back into the contest. Jhonny Peralta also made the most of available opportunities to level score at 4-4 for the Tigers.
However, the star of the show was Brennan Boesch who homered to right in the seventh to give the Tigers complete control of the situation.
Starting pitcher Rick Porcello also had a reasonable time on the mound to secure his fourth win of the season. He gave up nine hits in five innings to improve his ERA.
