Detroit Tigers hold their nerves to stun Cleveland Indians 10-8 – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers edged the Cleveland Indians 10-8 at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan on Sunday, August 5 in the finale of their three match series.
Tigers won first two games comprehensively and they continued their excellent work in the finale to secure a deserving series sweep against their American League Central Division rivals.
Indians’ Manager Manny Acta will be disappointed with the result of the game, especially after his team took an early 2-0 lead. First baseman Prince Fielder singled to centre in the first to put Tigers on the board.
Third baseman Miguel Cabrera had an excellent time on the plate with an RBI groundout in the third and Alex Avila singled in the fourth to level the score 3-3 for the Tigers.
Omar Infante also made the most of available opportunities, hitting a home-run to left in the fifth and Fielder hit a sacrifice fly to centre in the seventh to take the game into the extra inning.
"Nobody's heads were hanging," Austin Jackson said in a post game interview. "I think that's the good thing. Everybody had their heads up and anything can happen in those situations."
Indians took complete advantage of Tigers’ unforced errors in the tenth, scoring three runs to establish complete control over the contest.
However, the Tigers were not prepared to give up. Cabrera connected for a two run home-run to help the Tigers celebrate, perhaps, the most dramatic bounce back victory of the 2012 Major League Baseball season.
"It was a little scary," Cabrera said. "It was high. I was not sure if I hit it out. I'm glad."
"This is very deflating," Cleveland manager Manny Acta said. "You never believe it is going to happen. Even with Infante at the plate, I'm feeling confident because we've got two out, a two-run lead and our closer on the mound."
For the Indians, Shin-Soo Choo, Travis Hafner and Ezequiel Carrera homered but the Tigers were too hot to handle on Sunday. Tigers’ starting pitcher Max Scherzer tossed up five way-ward innings, giving up ten hits and four runs. Darwin Drowns took the win
after he held of the Indians in the tenth.
