Detroit Tigers hoping to go up in three straight games as club goes down two wins in the American League Championship Series
There is not much the Detroit Tigers can hope to do in the next three games. They will need to pitch their best, field their best and hit their best. The club recently lost 7 – 3 against the Texas Rangers in Game 4 of the American League Championship Series
at the Comerica Park in Detroit on Wednesday, October 12. The club is 1 – 3 in the tournament and now in need of a breather against a team that has all the major odds stacked in their favour.
The club will have to add Justin Verlander’s pitching prowess with a big upgrade in team morale. 26 of 32 teams have gone from 3 – 1 to qualify for the World Series and all the odds are in favour of the Texans. The Detroit manager however is proud of providing
the fans an amazing game of baseball. Both teams were tied till the eleventh inning of the match.
With a 3 – 3 score line in the first 10 innings, the skipper maintained that both teams were evenly matched.
"It's one of the best games I've ever been involved in," manager Jim Leyland said. "Great plays by both teams. Just didn't come out the right way."
One of the opposing players praised the Tigers after the game and it shows how this series could have swayed wither way, from the very start.
"The more you play games like this, the more respect you gain for the other team," Rangers first baseman Michael Young said. "The Tigers have a great team, they're playing hard and their pitching has been great. It's been a real nail-biter, but a lot of
fun."
The Rangers were good on the defence and the offence. Nelson Cruz caught Delmon Young out in right field and then threw the ball to Mike Napoli to tag out Miguel Cabrera out in the eighth. That marked one of the moments that could have turned the game on
its head.
The winner came from Cruz’s bat as his three run homer in the eleventh put the Tigers four runs behind in one inning for a fight back. Closer Jose Valverde could not do anything about the hit he conceded.
"You can't make a mistake with these guys," Valverde said. "I threw my best pitch, and [Cruz] got it. There's nothing you can do."
The Tigers now need to win. The last thing they would want is to lose the chase in Game 5 with Justin Verlander on the mound for the club. With just a good knock with the bat, the club could go back into the contest.
