Detroit Tigers humble Minnesota Twins 6-1 – MLB news
Detroit Tigers continued their excellent form as they secured a comfortable 6-1 win against the Minnesota Twins at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan on Sunday, May 26 in the finale of their four match series of the 2013 Major League Baseball regular season.
With their win, the Tigers improved their record to 28-20 to reclaim their top spot on the American League Central Division standings table. Indians held that position since the start of the season but Detroit raised the game play when it mattered. Manager
Jim Leyland will be very happy with what he seen from his men so far this season but he must identified the areas where Tigers need improvement to challenge other top teams in the American League including the likes of New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox.
Starting pitcher Max Scherzer continued his heroic winning streak as he allowed just three hits and one run in six solid innings to grab his seventh straight win of the season. It will be interesting to see if he can keep up the good work to win his first
even Pitching Triple Crown Award.
“If I was 0-7 but pitching well and giving the team a chance to win, I'd still be as proud of that,” Scherzer said. “For me, it's all about going out there and making sure that I'm pitching deep into games and keeping their offense down, and I've been doing
that for the most part.”
“He's added a curveball a little bit more, just another weapon, just kind of a `show-me' pitch,” manager Jim Leyland said. “When he gets in that arm slot and can be repetitive with it, he's pretty nasty.”
Relief pitcher Drew Smyly showed nerves of steel under pressure, tossing up two plus perfect innings to help the Tigers hold on to their lead. Outfielder Torii Hunter had his first real big day with the club as he smacked a solo home run in the first inning
to put his side on the board. Alex Avila, Miguel Cabrera, Victor Martinez and Prince Fielder also made useful contributions as the Tigers reached home safely.
