Detroit Tigers humiliated by Houston Astros 4-9 – MLB Spring Training
Detroit Tigers were annihilated by the Houston Astros 4-9 in an important Spring Training Game on Tuesday, February 26. Tigers were hammered by the Toronto Blue Jays 3-10 in their previous Spring Training game and they continued their poor form against the Astros as well.
Manager Jim Leyland will be extremely disappointed with what he saw from the Tigers. Considering the stature of this club, the fans have great expectations from the Tigers and it will be interesting to see if they can learn from their mistakes to turn things around in the regular season.
Astros, on the other hand, will be extremely pleased with their performance against one of the top sides in the American League. It will not be wrong to say that the Astros converted every opportunity to apply immense pressure on their opponents.
"When you look at our roster and the way it's constructed, it gives us good flexibility and good balance when you have a guy who can play first base, third base and can also DH. I like to have that flexibility," Bo Porter said.
"It's a rhythm and timing thing," Brett Wallace said. "We have been in the cage working quite a bit, just trying to get to a point of comfort where I'm . . . down with seeing pitches and recognizing them and putting good swings on them."
Astros’ starting pitcher Erik Bedard played a key role in deciding the outcome of the clash as he pitched two plus solid innings. Allowing just two hits and one run, he kept the Tigers on the defensive. Using his fastballs and sliders extremely effective, Bedard created all sorts of problems for the Tigers’ batting lineup.
Tigers’ starter Doug Fister, on the other hand, looked completely out of sorts as he gave up two hits and two runs in two innings. Relief pitcher Duane Below also paid the heavy price for his errors on the mound, allowing five hits and five runs in just one innings of relief. Jhonny Peralta and Brayan Pena made valuable contributions with the bat but the night belonged to the Astros who held on to their lead comfortably to complete a deserving victory.
