Detroit Tigers humiliated by Minnesota Twins 6-8 at Comerica Park – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers were humiliated by Minnesota Twins 6-8 at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan on Tuesday, July 3 in the second game of their four match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Despite having the home conditions working in their favour, Jim Leyland and company looked short of answers. Minnesota, on the other hand, took complete advantage of Tigers’ ineffective play to score their runs freely.
The bullpen proved to be the biggest disappointment for the Tigers’ fans. Relief pitcher Brayan Villarreal, in particular, had a horrible time on the mound as he gave up a sacrifice fly to Ryan Doumit in the seventh, which broke the tie.
Villarreal has given some decent performances since the start of the season and he was looking to continue his good work on Tuesday evening but unfortunately for him, things did not to work out as well as he had hoped for.
"We were fighting an uphill battle all night because of the way our pitching lined up," Leyland said.
Brennan Boesch finally made a good impression as he drove in crucial runs for the Tigers, including a home-run in the fourth inning. Austin Jackson also displayed some top quality hitting skills to keep Detroit in the game. He hit a two run home-run in the
fourth to level the score 6-6.
Josh Willingham played a key role in the Twins’ stunning win as he hit a sacrifice fly to left in the first inning and a home-run to left in the third inning. Trevor Plouffe also homered to left in the third to dent the Tigers’ confidence levels.
"I had a little nerves running out of the bullpen," said starting pitcher Max Scherzer who missed the game.
"Plouffe is just unbelievable right now," Gardenhire said. "I don't even know how to describe what he's doing. It seems like he's making at least one fantastic play a night and he had more than one tonight."
Relief pitcher Jeff Gray earned his fifth win of the season, giving up just one hit in two effective innings and the Twins held on to their slim lead to take 2-0 lead in the series.
