Detroit Tigers just four wins away from World Series title – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers continued their pitching domination as they humiliated the New York Yankees 8-1 at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan on Thursday, October 18 in Game 4 of American League Championship Series.
Game 4 was originally scheduled to be played on Wednesday evening but it had to be cancelled due to a predicted rain storm. However, even the rain could not help the Yankees avoid an embarrassing post-season series sweep.
Tigers’ starting pitcher Max Scherzer pitched with great control and accuracy on Thursday evening to restrict the Yankees to just one run in five plus solid innings. Striking-out ten batters, Scherzer showed the stuff he is capable. Austin Jackson, Miguel
Cabrera and Jhonny Peralta hit mighty home-runs to help Tigers score eight runs against New York’s ace C. C. Sabathia.
With Scherzer’s win, the Tigers also completed an emphatic post-season series sweep. They have now beaten the Yankees in the playoffs twice in a row. Tigers’ last World Series triumph was recorded in 1984. Since then, they made it to the World Series finals
in 2006 where they lost to the St. Louis Cardinals.
"It was tough," first baseman Prince Fielder said. "I don't know what happened, or else I would've tried to make it happen earlier. But it started to click."
"I was really just trying to keep it as relaxed as possible," Scherzer said. "For me, I was the one who lost last year in Game 6 of the ALCS, so I just used that as motivation. Just to have a chance and if I ever had a shot to pitch well in the ALCS again,
I would do it. And sure enough I was able to do it and we're going to a World Series."
However, with reliable and durable pitching resources, Jim Leyland and company are the firm favourites to lift the World Series title.
In Justin Verlander, Doug Fister, Anibal Sanchez and Scherzer, the Tigers have some of the best starters in the American League. What Tigers need now is to win four out of their next seven games. It will be interesting to see if Leyland and his men can continue
their good work in the best of seven game WS finals to make history.
