Detroit Tigers looking forward to spring training session – MLB News
Detroit Tigers are set to start their spring training session campaign. General Manager Dave Dombrowski has been very proactive this off-season as he powered Tigers pitching, hitting and fielding. With improved bench strength, the Tigers are looking stronger than ever before.
Last season, Jim Leyland and his men did a spectacular job to win the American League Central title. However, the Tigers were unable to continue their good run in the playoffs and their dreams were shattered.
The owner, Mike Ilitch has spent millions of dollars this season to build a tougher and more capable team. Agreeing to a $214 million contract with Prince Fielder, it looks as if the ownership is willing to pay any price for the World Series title this season.
In addition to a strong hitting unit, the Tigers have strengthened their pitching department by trading several reliable pitchers. Although they are yet to decide their three pitching spots (including a starting spot), the Tigers have accounted for the other 12.
With Victor Martinez (Tigers’ designated hitter) out for the entire season, we will get to see Miguel Cabrera play third base. Although many baseball analysts are convinced that Cabrera is too heavy for the 3B position, the player wants to prove a point by making the most of his available opportunities at his newly assigned position.
With the addition of Prince Fielder, the Tigers will be looking to score runs irrespective of the ballpark conditions. Fielder was quite sensational in 2011 as he batted with an incredible .299 average with 120 RBI’s and 38 home runs. Not only he is a great hitter, he is also athletic and agile on the field, which makes him one of the most wanted players in the game.
The Tigers are the favourites to win the American League Central title in 2012 and they will be more than a threat to other strong teams such as St. Louis Cardinal and New York Yankees. Tigers’ fans are desperate to see the players on the field after a long off-season break. Dombrowski, who has made some crucial moves, will not be looking to settle for anything less than a World Series title this season.
