Detroit Tigers looking to continue winning streak – MLB News
Detroit Tigers produced some magical performances in the last season. Not only they gave consistent results but also showed they have the ability to up their game play in pressure situations. Winning is not everything in baseball yet some say winning is
everything. They may be right, I suppose. However, Tigers’ extended winning streak in 2012 did not prove to be enough.
2012 American League Most Valuable Player and Triple Crown Award winner Miguel Cabrera, ace Justin Verlander and dangerous Prince Fielder all wanted the World Series title ring but it did not turn out to be the case after the Tigers suffered an embarrassing
4-0 series sweep against the San Francisco Giants.
The Tigers did manage to defend their American League pennant. In some ways, Tigers’ pitching played a key role in posting another successful season. Verlander, Doug Fister, Max Scherzer, Drew Smyly and Anibal Sanchez combined to form the best pitching combination
in Major League Baseball. Not only Tigers’ pitchers are accurate but also reliable.
"I think it does add to it," Verlander said. "You get that taste, and that desire. And you can draw from the disappointment, I guess, to come so close. "I mean, you've got to look at the big picture and realize what we accomplished last year was great. But
it wasn't the ultimate goal. We were four wins away from the ultimate goal."
"I'm ready to rock," said Leyland. "I'm ready to get back to work. I don't get too excited about it, but I am excited. … You've gotta be like an old shoe, though."
Third baseman Cabrera should be given a lot of credit helping the Tigers emerge victorious in several important encounters. Cabrera finished the season with incredible numbers and it will be interesting to see if he can continue the good work in 2013. Prince
Fielder, who had a relatively quiet time on the plate in the past season, will be looking to prove his metal. Rest of the offence will also be hungry for success and it should not be surprise if the Tigers finally end their 29 years World Series drought.
