Detroit Tigers looking to spend their money more wisely– MLB News
With 2012 season starting in a few months, Detroit Tigers will be looking to spend their money more wisely. According to a leading Major League Baseball website, the Tigers have spent more than $100 million on their payroll and they still have to a sign a few players before spring training starts next month.
Earlier this week the Tigers signed three deals, which were worth more than $11 million. Max Scherzer, Don Kelly and Delmon Young will be playing full time this year to allow the Tigers to avoid arbitration.
A few days ago, the Tigers revealed that one of their designated hitters, Victor Martinez, will be missing the entire next season due to a torn ALC. Martinez looked in commanding form the past season to help the Tigers win the American League Central title. He was participating in a routine training session when he suffered a knee injury and he is unlikely to be back until the 2013 season.
To overcome this serious loss, the owner Mike Ilitch will be looking for a replacement. Ilitch is known to spend lavishly when it comes to buying players. Although the Tigers are expected to get the insurance money for Martinez injury, they have spent millions on just 17 players and they may have to spend a lot more to complete their final roster.
Dave Dombrowski, Tigers' Manager could be looking at the option to replace Martinez with free agent Prince Fielder. However, with so many unsigned players available to the club, he will be looking to go for cheaper alternatives.
Over the new few days, Dave Dombrowski will be receiving a large number of phone calls from the agents. But considering his experience, he is expected to make the right decision. The Tigers may not sign a deal with Fielder; they will certainly go for the best possible option.
However, that being said, the Tigers are known to sign their arbitration eligible players which clear a major fiscal obstacle and it further goes on to prove that the management has excellent relationships with the players as well as the agents.
