Detroit Tigers lose to Chicago White Sox 4-5 – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers were unable to control their nerves under pressure as they lost to the Chicago White Sox 4-5 at U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago, Illinois on Monday, September 17.
Starting pitcher Doug Fister looked a bit off colour as he gave up eight hits and five runs in just four innings to take his ninth loss of the season. Relief pitchers Al Alburquerque, Phil Coke, Octavio Dotel and Brayan Villarreal combined to pitch four
scoreless innings but the White Sox held on to their one run lead with ease to grab a much needed victory.
Austin Jackson singled to shallow left in the third inning to break the deadlock and put Tigers on the board. Delmon Young also had a good time on the plate as he earned an RBI single to left centre in the third to stretch Tigers’ lead to 3-0 but Chicago
staged a memorable comeback to flatten their opponents
"That's a situation where every second baseman knows we're coming in hard. And it was a clean slide, and we took advantage of that," Alex Rios said. "We scored two runs on that play and ended up winning the game, so it was a big play."
"Rios got down there pretty good, we just didn't get the turn. Maybe if (Infante) could have come across the bag more," Detroit manager Jim Leyland said. "It was a tough double play. Rios got down there. When he hit it, I thought it was a sure double play."
Tigers will be extremely unhappy with the quality of their game in last two matches. They missed out on an excellent opportunity to sweep the Cleveland Indians, suffering a 6-7 loss in the finale. It seems Jim Leyland and company did not learn any lesson
as they failed to cross the finish line against the White Sox as well.
Right now, Tigers are placed second on the American League Central Division standings table, three games behind leaders, the Chicago White. Leyland will be expecting his team to show some resilience in these closing stages of the season to claim the AL Central
title for the second straight time.
