Detroit Tigers lose to Oakland Athletics 3-4 in Game 4 of ALDS – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers fell to the Oakland Athletics 3-4 at O.co Coliseum in Oakland, California on Wednesday, October 10 in Game 4 of their best of five game American League Divisional Series.
Tigers’ Manager will be disgusted with the outcome of a game that was played on an extremely competitive note. After edging past the A’s in first two games of the series at Comerica Park, Leyland and company had an excellent chance to wrap up an impressive
series sweep against their American League rivals but that did not turn out to be the case.
A’s played out of their skin in Game 3 and Game 4 to force the series into the decider. With momentum on their side, Melvin and his men will be certainly the favourites to emerge victorious in the finale.
Tigers’ starting pitcher Max Scherzer had a decent outing as he gave up just three hits and one run in five plus sharp innings. Striking-out eight batters, he created all sorts of problems for the A’s batting line-up early on. His counterpart from Oakland,
A.J. Griffin gave up seven hits and two runs in five innings.
"There's a confidence," manager Bob Melvin said. "We've done it so many times, so there's always going to be that confidence until we make that last out."
"That's why this is the greatest game of all," Tigers’ manager Jim Leyland said. "It looked like we were going to get it. We didn't do it. We didn't quite get the 27 outs, that's part of the game. You get tested all the time in this game. And this is a good
test."
Austin Jackson singled to left in the third inning to break the deadlock and put Tigers on the board. Prince Fielder homered to right in the fourth to double the lead to 2-0. Detroit led the score 2-1 going into the ninth and it seemed they will hold on
to their two run lead comfortably to reach the American League Championship Series.
However, relief pitcher Jose Valverde had an off day as he blew the save, giving up three runs in the ninth. Coco Crisp broke the tie with an RBI single to right.
