Detroit Tigers lose to Pittsburgh Pirates 0-1 – MLB news
Detroit Tigers took an embarrassing 0-1 loss against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan on Tuesday, May 28 in the finale of their two match series of the 2013 Major League Baseball regular season.
“That's a great offense, and Miguel Cabrera is probably the best hitter in baseball right now,” Pirates’ Jason Grilli said. “So I was trying to not make a big mistake, but you can't spend much time thinking about that. You just go out there and win the game.”
“I have nothing but great memories of this place,” Grilli said. “This is where Jim (Leyland) turned me into a reliever, and despite what the media might think I love coming back here.”
With their win, the Pirates also managed to level up the two match series. A lot of credit should be given to the Pirates for showing great determination, fighting spirit and mental toughness after taking a humiliating defeat at the hands of Tigers in the
opener. Pirates posted some excellent results in 2012 and it will be interesting to see if they can prevail in the National League Central Division this year under the supervision of Manager Clint Hurdle.
Tigers, on the other hand, will be looking to learn their lessons and come back strongly in the next game. Manager Jim Leyland will be expecting his men to bring some consistency in their results to consolidate their position at the top of American League
Central Division standings table.
Tigers’ starting pitcher Rick Porcello displayed some high quality pitching skills as he allowed just three hits in eight solid innings to help his side stay in the hunt. Striking out 11 Pirates’ batters, he used his fastballs and sliders superbly. However,
closer Jose Ortega was unable to control his nerves under pressure as he gave up the tie breaking single in the extra inning to take his second straight loss of the season.
“I faced him when I was in Minnesota and he was here in Detroit, and he's a different pitcher now,” Torii Hunter said.
Pirates’ second baseman Neil Walker smacked a solo home run in the tenth to ensure his side reached home with a victory.
