Detroit Tigers lose to St. Louis Cardinals 9-5 – MLB Spring Training
Detroit Tigers lost to St. Louis Cardinals 9-5 at the Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter, Florida on Wednesday, March 28 in their Grapefruit League encounter of the 2012 Major League Baseball Spring Training Session.
The Tigers have given some great results since the start of 2012 Spring Training. Although they lost an important game against the Cardinals on Wednesday, Jim Leyland and his men will be pretty pleased with what they have managed to achieve so far this spring.
St. Louis pitcher Adam Wainwright will be extremely disappointed with his performance against the Tigers. The guy looked completely out of sorts as he allowed four runs in just over four innings in Cardinals’ 9-5 win over the Tigers.
A few days ago, Wainwright would have felt that he is ready for the upcoming season. However, looking at his poor outing yesterday, it seems he still has to work hard on some stuff to be ready.
Wainwright had to miss the entire past season due to a ligament replacement surgery. Earlier this spring, the starter had tossed 16 solid innings without conceding an unearned run. Cardinals’ manager Mike Matheny stated that he was expecting Wainwright to
hobble through a rough outing.
"I was not good, that's for sure," Wainwright said. "That's the good thing about spring training, I have four days to go out and work on some stuff and get back and be ready for my next turn."
"What wouldn't be expected is all the outings we've seen up to this point -- that he competes and thinks his way through things when he doesn't have his best stuff. That's pitching," Matheny said.
For the Tigers, Jhonny Peralta and Austin Jackson put up a fine show. Peralta broke the scoreless tie with a single, brining Austin Jackson. Brennan Boesch also made a useful contribution with the bat to keep the Tigers in the hunt.
Tigers’ starter Drew Smyly also had poor time on the mound as he allowed three earned runs against Cardinals’ batters. Smyly, who is competing for the fifth starting spot on Tigers’ pitching rotation, will be looking to bounce back strongly before the Opening
Day.
