Detroit Tigers lose to Toronto Blue Jays 3-8 – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers made critical errors as they lost to Toronto Blue Jays 3-8 at Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario on Friday, July 27 in the opening game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
First baseman Prince Fielder had an excellent time on the plate. The 2012 Home Run Derby winner hit a solo home-run in the first inning to help the Tigers get off to a flying start. Tigers’ third baseman Miguel Cabrera also homered in the first inning to
put the Blue Jays under immense pressure.
However, apart from Cabrera and Fielder none of the Tigers’ hitters could smash any scoring shots and the Blue Jays bounced back strongly to clinch a thrilling win, taking a 1-0 lead in the series.
"We haven't swung the bats good the last few days," Manager Jim Leyland grumbled. "We didn't swing the bats good in Cleveland and we didn't swing the bats good again here tonight."
"We felt like we had a shot at him, we just didn't do anything," Leyland said of Blue Jays’ starter Carlos Villanueva in a post game interview. "He shut us down pretty good the rest of the game."
Blue Jays’ Manager John Farrell will be extremely pleased with what he saw from his players. Edwin Encarnacion had an RBI single to right in the first to put his side on the board. Jeff Mathis and Omar Vizquel also made useful contributions to help Toronto
take an impassable 6-2 lead in the seventh.
Fielder drove in a run in the eighth to reduce the lead to 3-6 but Travis Snider’s home-run to right-centre in the eighth shut the doors completely on the Tigers.
Tigers’ starting pitcher Rick Porcello struggled to execute his game plan as he gave up six hits and five runs in just six innings. Relief pitcher Duane Below also had a poor time on the mound, allowing two runs in the ninth.
Leyland and company, who have now moved to second place on the American League Central Division standing, will be looking to fight back in Game 2 to stay within touching distance of leaders Chicago White Sox.
