Detroit Tigers lose to Toronto Blue Jays despite Prince Fielder’s heroics – MLB news
Detroit Tigers continued their horrible form as they lost to the Toronto Blue Jays 3-8 at Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario on Monday, July 1 in the opening game of their four match series of the 2013 Major League baseball regular season.
After making an excellent start to the season, it seems the Tigers have lost their way completely. The loss damaged Tigers’ record to 43-38 and it will be interesting to see if they can regain some confidence to keep their top position on the American League
Central Division standings table.
Tigers’ batting line-up had a terrible time as they failed to make the most of available scoring opportunities. Despite having some big names in the line-up, the Tigers batting have not been able to live up to the expectations this season. It will be exciting
to see if 2013 Most Valuable Player Miguel Cabrera, Prince Fielder and Torii Hunter can find their lost form to help their team put things back on the right track.
Starting pitcher Jose Alvarez paid the ultimate price for his errors on the mound as he allowed six hits and five runs in just three innings to take his second straight loss this season. Relief pitcher Luke Putkonen and Darin Downs also struggled to control
the flow of runs as the Blue Jays put up a huge total on the board.
“It's been kind of a tough go getting it back,” Dickey said of his velocity. “I threw a knuckleball 81 miles an hour today, I threw a lot at 80 miles an hour, I threw an 85 mile an hour fastball. All those velocities are tops for the year.”
“That's the velocity I could count on last year,” he added. “You can get away with a lot more mistakes when the velocity's up there.”
“Just another great outing,” Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said. “Second one in a row. I see more bite on his knuckleball than we've seen in the past a little bit.”
For Toronto, starter RA Dickey put up another fine performance, allowing just two runs in seven innings to bag his eighth win of the year.
