Detroit Tigers lost to Kansas City Royals 2-3 despite Justin Verlander’s heroics – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers lost to Kansas City Royals 2-3 at the Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan on Wednesday, May 2 in the second game of their two match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Both teams put up a brilliant fight in a game that was played on an extremely competitive note. Kansas City had the first laugh as Eric Hosmer doubled to deep centre to help his team get off to a positive start. The Tigers had several scoring opportunities in the next five innings but their batting line up failed miserable.
Ned Yost and company led the score 2-0 at the end of the sixth, thanks to Jeff Francoeur who combined with Alex Gordon to score the second run. Only Brennan Boesch managed to get a hit for the Tigers as he homered to right in the eighth to level the score at 1-1. With momentum on their side, it seemed as if the Tigers will get home but the Royals had other ideas.
"Sanchez used his fastball well," Yost said. "After battling strep throat the past three days, so he started to lose some energy in the fifth."
"It looked like we were coming out of it a little, but then we get (five) hits," Jim Leyland said.
Second baseman Chris Getz displayed some high quality hitting skills in the bottom of the ninth to help the Royals win for the fourth time in their last seven games. Showing no signs of nerves, Getz drove in an infield single to shortstop and Mike Moustakas scored to give the Royals a crucial 3-2 lead.
"Peralta plays up the middle, so I tried to shoot it in the hole," Getz said.
Tigers’ starting pitcher Justin Verlander will be disappointed with the result of the game. He allowed two runs, six hits and a walk.
"The one pitch I want back is the one in the first to Hosmer," Verlander said. "I got (Billy) Butler with a runner on third, and then I made just a horrible pitch to Hosmer. That's something I can't do.
The 2011 American League Most Valuable Player Award winner struck out seven in his eighth inning outing.
