Detroit Tigers march on as they trounce Tampa Bay Rays 2-1 – MLB Update
The Detroit Tigers strengthened their position at the top of the American League Central division as they overcame a tough fight from the Tampa Bay Rays to win 2-1 at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida on Tuesday, August 23.
The Rays took a one-run lead in the third inning but were restricted by the Tigers thereon who did not allow the home side a single scoring opportunity after that play. The Tigers were held back by the Rays till the seventh inning when two scintillating
pieces of brilliance saw the visitors edge past Tampa and take an unassailable one-run lead.
David Price was unlucky on losing out what was an exceptional performance from the mound. He pitched six near-perfect innings before he became weary in the seventh inning and gave away two runs which disallowed what could have been an exciting win for the
Rays.
Price went on to pitch eight innings for just six hits and two runs to bring his earned-run average down to 3.53. He managed 73 strikes out of a total of 116 pitches but was unfortunate to lose his 11th game of the season with as many wins to
his credit thus far. Kyle Farnsworth replaced him at the mound to close the game and successfully did so but the batters failed to add that extra run.
Brad Penny was successful for the ninth time this season for the Tigers as he managed to restrict the opposition to just one run in 6.1 innings. Although he leaked eight hits in his spell, the Rays failed to convert half chances into runs.
Daniel Schlereth and Ryan Perry pitched .1 inning each and held their fifth and second game respectively before two crunch innings from Phil Coke, deep in the game, saw him save his first game this season.
Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez were the lucky scorers for the Tigers as the former added his run helped by Alex Avila’s single towards centre field while the latter completed his run on Jhonny Peralta’s sacrifice fly hit.
The Tigers lead the four-game series 2-0 with the third game scheduled for Wednesday, August 24.
