The Detroit Tigers may extend a contract to their arbitration-eligible Delmon Young, as news reports suggested on Monday, December 12. One of the most dependable left-fielders of the Tigers, Young’s arbitration offer hangs in the balance for now.
But with the reports that he will be offered arbitration brings to fore the likelihood of his becoming a free-agent. The fact that Monday night is the deadline will make it clear whether Young too shall be a free-agent in case of accepting or not accepting
the arbitration.
What Young decides is something that cannot be stated with certainty given the uncertainty that prevails in the market.
Young, like mentioned earlier, is a reliable name of the team, commanding admiration and respect from the club members and management. But where lay uncertainty was in the arbitration offer and its aftermaths.
For now, the by-line for him appears to be ‘wait and see’. For the general manager of the Detroit Tigers he is a big league hitter who is a threat to any team when he comes on the plate.
"If Delmon Young's our left fielder, we're pretty happy," Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said last week during baseball's Winter Meetings. "I mean, the guy's a proven big league hitter that's a threat [when] he comes to the plate, that we think fits
into our club real well.
“And we played a lot better after Aug. 1 the rest of the year when we had Delmon Young and [Doug] Fister. So we think we can continue to play very well with the club we have."
In the 124 games that he played this season, he remained 473 at-bats, scoring 54 runs with 127 hits to his credit, hitting 12 home-runs and 64 RBIs and maintaining an average of .268 throughout with .302 OBP and .393 SLG.
The performance that the Detroit Tigers put this season was indeed satisfying for many, including the fans and management. However, as they could make it to the playoffs, they could also make their way into the World Series, but results did not favour them.
Likes of Delmon Young could make it possible this year.
