Detroit Tigers on historic pitching run, beat New York Yankees 2-1 in Game 3 of ALCS – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers held their nerve under pressure as they secured a narrow 2-1 win against the New York Yankees at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan on Tuesday, October 16 in Game 3 of American League Championship Series.
Manager Jim Leyland will be a very happy man these days. After making a shaky start to the regular season, Tigers finally find them in a position they had hoped for.
Doug Fister and Anibal Sanchez were absolutely brilliant in first two games of the series as they combined to pitched 14 shut-out innings to help Tigers claim a crucial 2-0 series lead.
It was Justin Verlander’s turn on Tuesday evening. The hard throwing Tigers’ ace came out with his best stuff to limit the Yankees to just one run. Showing great composure and character, Tigers’ starting pitcher gave up just three hits in 8.1 effective innings
to make quick work of Yankees’ batting line-up.
"I've got faith in our bullpen. Coke did a great job in New York. He's done a great job for us all year, so I was OK with it," Verlander said in a post game interview. "And I was up around 130 pitches or so, so I don't think they're just going to leave me
out there and sacrifice the rest of the postseason just for this game, especially when Coke's been throwing the ball extremely well."
Phil Coke, who replaced Jose Valverde at the closing position, also had a great time on the mound as he tossed up 0.2 scoreless inning to hold off the Yankees.
With momentum on their side, the Tigers will have an excellent chance to wrap up a memorable series sweep against New York in Game 4. Looking for their first World Series title since 1984, Tigers are on a historic pitching run.
With the exception of a four run inning against Valverde in Game 1 of ALCS, the Yankees have been shut-out for the entire series, which shows the kind of comfort level Tigers’ pitchers are feeling right now. Leyland will be expecting his men to continue
their good work in Game 4 to finish off the Yankees.
