Detroit Tigers pitcher Doug Fister reflects on Game 3 victory, points to defence for support
If there was one man who surprised the experts on Tuesday, October 11, at the Comerica Park in Detroit, it was Doug Fister. The Detroit Tigers pitcher was instrumental in getting his club to a 5 – 2 victory over the Texas Rangers. The hurler managed to generate
his club’s first win the in the American League Championship Series, this year. The club is now 1 – 2 in the competition and they can thank Fister.
The hurler however addressed the game differently as he pointed to the defensive strategy that got the winner in favour of the Tigers. Alex Avilla marshalled the infield well, as the Tigers closed down the Rangers and went on top with gap slashing victory.
"I just stuck with the same game plan," said Fister. "They hit a few ground balls that made it through the hole, and they have good hitters, too. They came out firing, and Alex [Avila] and I stuck with our defence. Tremendous plays out there, and that's
the name of the game."
The Rangers managed to score the first run in the first inning but they could not do much after that as the club failed to do anything against Fister. The Detroit hurler pitched 7.1 innings, allowing just two runs off seven hits. His contribution with the
throws was most appreciated by the fans that can now see their club play for a series tie in Game 4 of the American League Championship Series.
The hurler however reflected back on the action in Game 3. He tentatively explained the club’s strategy that led to the winner.
"They came out swinging the bats," said Fister. "That was their approach. It was obviously working for them, but at the same time, Alex and I really focused on doing the same thing from the get go. We were going to attack the zone with our fastball and keep
it down and use the defence. We stuck with it."
With the Tigers 1 – 2 behind, they will look to pull off a lead in the next two games, in order to force the pressure back on the Rangers.
