Detroit Tigers ready to finish off New York Yankees – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers are leading the American League Championship Series 2-0 against the New York Yankees. As the series moves to Comerica Park in Detroit, where the Tigers won 50 games, they will have an excellent chance to finish off the Yankees.
Ace Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer, two of the best Tigers’ starters, are scheduled to start the next two games and the struggling Yankees’ offence will have to play out of their skins to take the series back to Yankee Stadium in the Bronx.
However, General Manager Dave Dombrowski wants Jim Leyland and company to focus on the task at hand. He does not want the Tigers to get carried away with the situation. Tigers have their best chance to win the World Series title since 1984.
“We definitely have a lot of confidence but we’ve been in this position before,” said centre fielder Austin Jackson. “The Oakland series, we were up 2-0 and they tied. Anything can happen. We just want to keep our foot on the gas.”
“So we’ll try to win Tuesday’s game,” said Detroit general manager Dave Dombrowski. “Look at what’s happened in this postseason. How many clubs have come back when there’s been two strikes and two outs? So the tension is always there and you have to focus
on the job at hand.”
In a way, they find themselves in a very familiar situation. They comprehensively beat the Yankees in last year’s American League Division Series. A similar result in this year’s ALCS will send them to the World Series finals, where they will face either
the San Francisco Giants or defending champions St. Louis Cardinals.
Doug Fister and Anibal Sanchez did not allow a single run at Yankee Stadium, which shows the kind of pressure Yankees’ batting line-up is feeling these days.
A lot of responsibility will be with the likes of Robinson Cano, Nick Swisher and Curtis Granderson, who are working hard to put Yankees on the winning track. Having lost their Captain Derek Jeter to an ankle injury, it will be a test of nerves, character
and composure for the Yankees to find a way back into the series.
