Detroit Tigers rout Los Angeles Angels 5-1 to win series – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers continued their impressive winning streak as they beat the inform Los Angeles Angels 5-1 at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan on Thursday, July 19 in the finale of their four game series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Jhonny Peralta provided the Tigers with a decent start as he doubled to deep-centre in the second inning to break the deadlock.
Alex Avila, who has recently returned from the Disabled List, homered to left in the second to extend the lead to 3-0. Danny Worth doubled to deep-left and Miguel Cabrera homered to left-centre in the fifth to give the Tigers complete control of the contest.
Third baseman Prince Fielder provided the Tigers a lift and push in the second inning.
"That's just how I play," he said. "I don't do it for a spark. I just play hard. I gave myself a little headache. I don't know what I hit, but I was a little dizzy."
Starting pitcher Max Scherzer had another decent outing as he gave up just three hits and a run in seven solid innings. Striking-out nine, he secured his ninth win of the season.
"When you have a good team, at some point they're going to play good," Detroit manager Jim Leyland said. "And, we're playing pretty good right now. This is really not a surprise to me. You just have to weather the storms we did in the first half and we survived
that pretty well."
Manager Jim Leyland will be extremely happy with the performance of some of the key players in the series. Detroit started the series on a very positive note, beating the Angels 8-6 in the series opener.
However, the Angels hammered them in Game 2 and it seemed as if they will carry over the momentum to secure another easy series win.
Tigers’ win against the Angels on Thursday has now put them on second place in the American League Central Division standings. Just two games behind the leaders Chicago White Sox, the Tigers will be hoping to maintain their excellent form over the next couple
of months to reach the playoffs for the second straight season.
