Detroit Tigers rout Minnesota Twins 5-1 in series finale – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers crushed the Minnesota Twins 5-1 at Target Field in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Wednesday, August 15 in the finale of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Tigers’ starting pitcher Max Scherzer put up another dominant show as he struck-out ten batters in seven solid innings. Allowing just four hits and no run, he grabbed his 12th win of the season on Wednesday. Relief pitcher Joaquin Benoit pitched
the perfect ninth to lead the Tigers to an impressive win.
"I hate walking guys. I just hate it," Scherzer said, adding: "You just can't give hitters credit and be afraid of them."
Miguel Cabrera had another outstanding night with the bat as he homered to right in the first inning to put Tigers on the board. Delmon Young also connected for a two run home-run in the fourth to give his side the momentum.
Cabrera singled to centre in the fifth and Omar Infante added an RBI single to right centre in the eighth. For the Twins, Joe Mauer earned an RBI single in the eighth to score the only run.
"I'm awful proud of our guys," said Tigers’ manager Jim Leyland.
"It's not about one person. I'm more excited because we're winning today," said Cabrera, who became the first player in Detroit Tigers’ history to hit at least 30 home-runs in five consecutive seasons.
"When my career's over?" he said, smiling. "It's a long way to go to talk about my numbers. That's good, but Detroit's seen a lot of great players."
Credit should be given to the Tigers for adjusting to the conditions brilliantly after receiving a hammering in the series opener. Tigers outclassed Minnesota 8-4 in Game 2 to keep the series alive and they continued their excellent work in finale to secure
a much needed win.
Despite their win on Wednesday, the Tigers remain second placed on the American League Central Division standings table, just a game behind the leaders Chicago White Sox. It will be interesting to see if Jim Leyland and company can maintain their excellent
form in closing stages of the season to make it through to the playoffs.
