Detroit Tigers secure a narrow 5-4 win against Chicago White Sox – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers secured a narrow 5-4 win against Chicago White Sox at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan on Friday, May 4 in the opening game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Ryan Raburn hit a sacrifice fly to centre in the second and the Tigers took 1-0 lead. Catcher Alex Avila also had a great time on the plate as he homered to left to give the Tigers 2-1 lead in the fourth.
Miguel Cabrera showed why he is an asset for the Tigers as he helped Detroit reduce Chicago’s lead to 3-4 in the eight. However, the star of the show was Jhonny Peralta who hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth and the Tigers came back from behind to steal a thrilling 5-4 win.
"It's the best moment you can feel," Peralta said. "The first home run this year -- and walk-off. It's not bad, huh?"
"I didn't hit it too much to right field last year, so this year it feels really good for me to hit the ball to right field," Peralta said. "I don't worry about the homer. I try to hit the ball, make good contact. ... When you make good contact, the ball goes no matter what."
Manager Jim Leyland and General Manager Dave Dombrowski will be very pleased to see their team doing well in front of their home crowd. The Tigers were expected to win most of the games at the Comerica Park this season but that has not turned out to be the case so far.
Tigers’ win over the White Sox on Friday evening was only their eighth in Detroit and they have lost similar number of games.
Considering the amount of money the club poured in during the offseason, the Tigers were expected to be the most successful team in American League Central division but the reigning Al central champions have managed to win just 13 out 25 games so far and it will be interesting to see if the Tigers can give consistent results after the All Star break to make it to the playoffs.
