Detroit Tigers share thoughts on young outfielders – MLB News
Inside their hotel in Nashville, the Detroit Tigers discussed the possible outfield combinations for the next season. They also shared some scenarios with the media after the first full day of Winter Meetings.
The discussions focused on a pair of outfielders; prospect Nick Castellanos and Avisail Garcia. Tigers’ General Manager Dave Dombrowski also talked about how the pair could shake up the outfield for the Tigers in 2013.
There is no denying the fact both Castellanos and Garcia are extremely talented hitters and the question is if they are talented enough to secure a permanent place on Tigers’ big league roster in the next season. Of course, the Tigers are looking to get
some young blood on the club.
"They're talented enough that it's not out of the question one could earn playing time (regular season) in spring training," said Dave Dombrowski.
"Everybody thinks this guy is gonna hit like crazy," Dombrowski added.
"Our general philosophy is you won't see us carrying them if they get 40 games and Dirks gets 120," Dombrowski said of Castellanos and Garcia. "I can't see us leaving spring training with that thought in mind.”
Owner Mike Ilitch is already 83-years-old and he is desperate to win the World Series title. Tigers’ owner is not worried about the high payroll, as it seems all he cares about is the World Series title.
Garcia displayed some high quality hitting skills last season, particularly in closing stages of the game. He raised his game considerably during his September-October stint in Detroit. It will not be a surprise to anyone if he ends up in left field alongside
Andy Dirks as Leyland’s options in 2013.
Castellanos, on the other hand, is yet to make his Major League Baseball debut. It is possible the Tigers will give him a chance to prove his mettle in Spring Training. If Castellanos can do well, he might become Leyland’s preference in left field over Garcia.
It will be interesting to see what the Tigers decide in the coming days as the fans are expecting great things from their team in the 2013 MLB regular season.
