Detroit Tigers show interest in shortstop Stephen Drew – MLB Update
According to several sources, the Detroit Tigers are showing interest to sign former Oakland Athletics' shortstop and current free agent Stephen Drew.
Tigers played this past season’s World Series Championship against the San Francisco Giants but lost bitterly in the end after showing an impressive run in the post-season.
However, as soon as the Tigers came out from the World Series’ humiliation, they started thinking of rebuilding their roster and kept shortstop Jhonny Peralta picking up his $6 million options as well.
Later they signed outfielder Torii Hunter which is considered their best initiative of the post-season. Now, they are looking positive to add another good Major League player for the 2013 Major League Baseball season.
"I am looking at that (the Angels), times two, I am looking at Austin Jackson at the top of the lineup, then me, then Cabrera. Then I look at Prince Fielder and Victor Martinez is coming back. We aren't talking about guys who just swing the bat try to hit 30 homers but hit .230,” Hunter said last week, after being introduced as the Tigers' new right fielder for 2013 Major League Baseball season.
He added, “We're talking about guys that sit and be patient and wait for their pitcher and battle and battle and battle, till they get a base hit or a homer or whatever. And they're clutch. They're very patient hitters in that lineup. That's what I saw."
The Tigers have now turned their attention towards signing free agent Drew. He last played for the Athletics and finished with good numbers.
His hitting average remained consistent throughout the season at .223 along with seven homers, 28 RBIs and .309 OBP.
His six years of Major League experience also makes him an attractive free agent in this year’s free agency market. With his career .265 hitting average along with 77 homers, 349 RBIs and .328 OBP, Drew is likely to sign with a leading MLB franchise.
Experts believe that if Drew comes in the Tigers' roster this offseason, chances are high that the next Major League season will be a huge success for the Detroit Tigers.
