Detroit Tigers show optimism to sign Roy Oswalt – MLB News
Current free agent starting pitcher Roy Oswalt still needs a team for next Major League season after his former franchise the Philadelphia Phillies denied exercising team options late last year. As soon as he was denied by his team for next contract, he filed for free agency and started looking towards other options to carry his game forward.
Now reports are coming that the Detroit Tigers are taking some serious interest to sign Oswalt for next future seasons. Before Oswalt, the Tigers are also showing some great optimism for former Tampa Bay Rays' player Johnny Damon.
Recently, the Tigers' general manager Dave Dombrowski has stated in the media regarding new players’ signing especially Oswalt potential arrival in the franchise.
Dombrowski said, “With players, we've been open-minded to upgrade in the best way we can. I don't think we would want to address anybody at this time. Maybe after someone has signed we can talk in some detail. Read 'em all, and none of 'em are credible. With our situation (after last week's loss of Martinez), we haven't dismissed anything yet for, I don't want to disparage the fact, But we're also not in position that we would have immediate plans. Don’t know if it will be a long or a short process, we’ve got a lot of names to consider.”
Several reports have been also circulating in the media that Boston Red Sox including Texas Rangers, New York Mets, Colorado Rockies, Oakland Athletics, Chicago White Sox, Cleveland Indians, Kansas City Royals, Atlanta Braves, Baltimore Orioles and New York Yankees are also potential candidates to sign Oswalt but still nothing official has come out in the media.
Oswalt, who went 9-10 last season, his overall standing at 159-93 with a terrific 3.21 ERA. His presence in the Tigers’ roster will certainly change their defensive attitude towards every game. Oswalt considering an offensive player will also prove a back-up pitcher for Justin Verlander. His last year’s performances with the Phillies have put him high on the free agent rankings as well while the next few days are critical when his next season’s team will be decided.
