Detroit Tigers shutout Chicago White Sox 5-0 – MLB Update
Justin Verlander threw some of the best seven innings on Tuesday, September 13 to help the Detroit Tigers beat the Chicago White Sox 5-0 at U.S. Cellular Field.
Becoming the only player since 1920 to have won 23 games and at the same time, throwing a no-hitter, Verlander remained a sensation during the game.
For Verlander, the occasion was simply great. He could not have desired for more at such a time. "It's probably best I've felt in the last few starts, the last five or six," Verlander said. "I really felt like I was getting back that rhythm I've been trying
to find for a while."
Having seen the talent long ago, Detroit Tigers’ manager had brought Verlander in the team. He, for sure, knows what Verlander means to the team as a whole. "He's the best pitcher I've ever had," manager Jim Leyland said. "I'll leave it at that."
However, Verlander’s performance was not only acknowledged by the team-mates and fans alone. Being a talent in his own right and a legend, Verlander had admirers in the rival team’s camp on Tuesday.
"When you face a pitcher of that calibre you've got to get it done before he starts to make his pitch," White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said.
Having won the last game 14-4, the Detroit Tigers seemed to have another brilliant day. Gavin Floyd was subject to an early hit by Alex Avila who scored a single in the second inning to give the team an early lead.
Having got support from the offence, Verlander definitely knew where to pitch. The 1-0 lead remained intact in the bottom of the second. As the game progressed, it was the Tigers which remained in charge of the match.
Victor Martinez had a big homer in the sixth against Gavin Floyd to effectively establish the dominance of the Detroit Tigers in the game with an irreversible lead that remained there, much to the chagrin of the Chicago White Sox.
As Matt Thornton replaced Floyd, he could hardly contain Miguel Cabrera who scored a single in the seventh to give the team an ultimate 5-0 lead which was kept intact by Justin. He gave up six hits in the seven innings and did not allow any run to win his
23rd game of the season.
Jose Valverde came as a closer to end the game with a 5-0 win for the Detroit Tigers, the second win for the team in as many games and all set for sweeping the series.
The Tigers put in a tremendous performance as they restricted the White Sox offence from scoring any runs in the game.
