Detroit Tigers shutout New York Yankees 3-0 in Game 2 of ALCS – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers continued their impressive winning run as they shut-out the New York Yankees 3-0 at Yankee Stadium in New York, NY on Sunday, October 14 during Game 2 of their seven match American League Championship Series.
After edging their American League rivals in series opener, the Tigers put up another masterful performance in Game 2 to take crucial 2-0 series lead. Without Derek Jeter, New York is certainly under a lot of pressure and the Tigers are aware of that.
Jim Leyland and company made the Yankees pay for their errors in a game that was dominated by the pitchers. Tigers’ starting pitcher Anibal Sanchez looked in terrific touch as he gave up just three hits in seven sharp innings to lay the foundation of an
impressive Tigers’ victory.
Striking-out seven Yankees’ batter, Sanchez made good use of his fastballs and curveballs. Relief pitcher Phil Coke kept Yankees on the defensive as he tossed up two scoreless innings to help Tigers complete a deserving shut-out victory.
"They've done it in the past," team president/general manager Dave Dombrowski said, "but right now they're in a really good groove."
"The thing is, we knew with our rotation, if we're able to get in, we knew we could do some damage," catcher Alex Avila said. "We have guys that can strike guys out, which is big in the playoffs. That's always like a must-have. And obviously, we have Verlander,
so we were going to have a shot."
Delmon Young, who played a key role in deciding the outcome of Game 1, continued to impress the skipper as he grounded into fielder’s choice to shortstop in the seventh inning to break the deadlock and put Tigers on the board.
"We have to make adjustments," Yankees’ manager Joe Girardi said. "We know what they are doing to us."
Avisail Garcia also made his presence felt with an RBI single to right in the eighth to double Tigers’ lead 2-0. American League Most Valuable Player candidate Miguel Cabrera earned an RBI single to right in the eighth to help Tigers wrap up a superb victory
in the Bronx.
