Detroit Tigers’ star pitcher Justin Verlander selected Player of the Year – MLB News
The most dominating pitcher in the Major League Baseball 2011 regular and post-season, the Detroit Tigers star Justin Verlander has been selected Player of the Year by the Major League Baseball Players Association.
This reward was the straight factor of his determined performance for the Tigers in 2011. Not only did he perform wonderfully in the regular season, but in the next round of competition especially in the post-season, he also made his mark by throwing brilliantly
and managed to win many games for his team.
On Thursday, Verlander won the majority of the votes by the MLB Players Association and defeated his two opponents Boston Red Sox first baseman Adrian Gonzalez and New York Yankees out-fielder Curtis Granderson.
After winning this award, Verlander spoke during a conference call and said, “Obviously from a personal standpoint, it was an amazing year. I worked extremely hard for this, if you expect greatness, it shouldn't surprise you. So I've always expected myself
to be able to pitch this way. So it still doesn't surprise me I did.”
Justin Verlander, who had a 2.40 ERA average, along with 24-5 record (win loss), 250 strike-outs and a 0.92 WHIP, certainly made an impact this year and earned great acknowledgement from many baseball experts.
He truly deserved this award and was finally able to win it. Before achieving this accomplishment, many have already speculated in the media as he will easily win this year’s players admiration and out-do Grandson and Gonzalez.
Earlier, Verlander has also been declared Tiger of the Year by the Detroit Chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America. On the other hand, all these awards are adding a great year in his career while 2011 is proving wonderful so far for Verlander
and the fans can pretty much guess as he will certainly win some more awards before the start of the 2012 season.
It will be interesting to see how many awards Verlander manages to win during the off-season and what impact it might have on him getting ready for the 2012 season.
