Detroit Tigers start 2011 spring training with pitchers’ workout
Things don’t get old with the Detroit Tigers each spring as they reignite their pursuit for the title. The stage is set for the roaring Tigers and they have the right squad members to prowl on the right initiative.
Detroit were in Lakefield, Florida to kick off the 75th spring training with the pitchers and they did so successfully with a squad they can acquaint themselves effectively with throughout the coming weeks.
Manager Jim Leyland saw some of the best players coming to the occasion before the official workout session even began. Leyland was kicking off his 49th career spring training and it was a familiar practice that has not grown on the baseball icon.
“It never gets old,” said manager Jim Leyland. “It's an exciting day, because we know it's a long grind. I know I'm excited about it.”
Leyland has come in with an effective bullpen and a jam-packed rotation. Leyland has never had a squad as ready as this one since 2006- the year when he took the managerial position.
There are not more than 2 positions available in the bullpen area and that means spring training would welcome in additions from the minor leagues.
Leyland is calling for players to actively remain focused with high reflex fielding practice.
“Our job,” Leyland said, “is to make the Detroit Tigers organization the best it can be.”
The club has veteran boost in the roster as Victor Martinez and Joaquin Benoit are the new additions to light up the roster. The club is also sporting local Class-A Lakefield prospect Charlie Furbush in the squad.
“It's been quite a ride,” Furbush said. “I'm just going to take it all in. I'm excited to be here, obviously, in my first big league camp, but I'm only going to worry about the things that I can control.”
With a strong unit, can the Tigers make it to the World Series in 2011? We’ll have to wait and see.
