The Detroit Tigers starting pitcher, Justin Verlander has won another honour for his great performance in the last Major League Baseball season, as he was recently awarded by ‘The Mayo Smith Society’ with the ‘King Tiger’ award. Verlander has won this particular
‘King Tiger’ award for the second time in his last three particular seasons.
King Tiger award is also special as it is decided by the fans of Detroit and it has been observed over the past seven years that every winner has rightly won it, just because of the involvement of local Tigers’ fans. Previously, King Tiger award has been
given to Miguel Cabrera, Justin Verlander, Magglio Ordonez, Kenny Rogers, Placido Polanco, Carlos Guillen and Ivan Rodriguez.
On the occasion, Todd Miller, who is Mayo Smith Society’s administrator, said in the media regarding this year’s winner and expressed the feelings of the entire society about Verlander and how talented he is.
Miller said, “Justin Verlander's excellence on the diamond and commitment to the community make him most worthy of the King Tiger award, it is rare to find a professional athlete who uses his celebrity for helping others to the extent that Justin does. Regardless
of how Justin's career progresses, we can be proud that he wears a Tigers uniform.”
For most Verlander fans, it was just another award as he has won so many honours this year and supporters seem to have got used to their favourite player winning awards.
Verlander, whose performance has remained on top all season long, won the Cy Young along with Most Valuable Player MVP, American League’s top Player and won a special MVP recognition being a starting pitcher who went on to win the MVP award as well.
Before Verlander, only Oakland Athletics’ closing pitcher, Dennis Eckersley won MVP recognition almost two decades ago. Verlander’s stats remained total in-control as he went 2.40 on ERA along with 24-5 win-loss record, 250 thrilling strikeouts and just
0.92 WHIP in the last season. While his career average of 3.54 ERA with 107-57 win-loss record, 1215 total strike-outs and tremendous 1.19 WHIP in all these six years of his professional baseball career testify to his tremendous talent.
