Detroit Tigers’ third-baseman Miguel Cabrera works hard on position transition – MLB News
Making room for newly arrived Prince Fielder at first-base, the Detroit Tigers’ Miguel Cabrera has officially started training on third-base in 2012 Major League Spring Training in Arizona. His position transition from first to third base is certainly a hot topic in the Tigers roster and entire management.
Initially the Tigers’ management who were reluctant to move Cabrera to his old playing position is now coming-up with different views justifying his new position which he is actually vacating for Prince Fielder.
Fielder, who enjoys and always played on that particular position in the recent past, certainly needs this type of favour from his new franchise to perform well against every opponent. He left the Milwaukee Brewers in this offseason and signed with the Tigers for a hefty contract.
On Cabrera’s position transition, the Tigers’ coaches are taking extra interest and spending some additional time with him. According to Tigers’ infield coach Rafael Belliard, “The routine play is all I'm asking for -- not only from Miguel, but from all our infielders. That's what we'll practice every day. They'll see a lot of routine plays. I think in six weeks he'll be ready to start the season, The first thing we have to do is get his legs in shape, You don't want to take a chance by doing too much too early. He hasn't played third base for a few years, so I'll start off by hitting the ball softly to him so he can read the ball off the bat.”
Before coming into the Tigers’ roster, Cabrera has played with Miami Marlins for almost four years, but as soon as he arrived in the Tigers’ roster, he reached real stardom and brought his game to another level. Experts believe, his late position transition matter, is somewhat nothing big for Cabrera. He is one of those players who take challenges with enormous amount of responsibility and feel really pride doing something extra for the franchise. His recent position changing matter will be resolved whenever the next season starts. He is used to taking up challenges and this time around as well, he has been given more responsibility as a senior player.
