Detroit Tigers thrash Kansas City Royals 7-1 to complete series sweep – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers thrashed Kansas City Royals 7-1 at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan on Sunday, July 8 in the finale of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
Jhonny Peralta provided the Tigers with an exceptional start as he homered to left in the second inning to put his side 2-0 ahead. Delmon Young also had a decent outing, hitting a home-run to centre in the fourth inning to help Detroit restore their two
run lead.
All Star selection Prince Fielder showed just why he is an asset to have in the team as he hit a three run home-run to right in the fifth inning to extend Tigers’ lead to 6-1. Starting pitcher Max Scherzer worked seven solid innings, allowing just one run
and five hits with seven strike-outs for his eighth win of the season.
"He was pretty good. He was 96, good run on his fastball," Kansas City manager Ned Yost said. "He was good."
"It's the consistency. You can look at our team, we're just playing good team baseball. Everybody's starting to kind of click, our offense is really starting to produce some runs," Scherzer said. "Our starting staff is starting to give a lot more quality
starts, give them a chance to do their job. Obviously our bullpen's shutting them down, seven, eight, nine, we've got guys for that. You put that together, we're a pretty good team."
Manager Jim Leyland will be very excited with what he saw from the Tigers in a three game series against the Royals. In a low scoring series opener, Leyland and company held their nerves to prevail 4-2. Both teams displayed top quality fighting skills in
Game 2 but it was the Tigers who had the last laugh as they secured a narrow 8-7 win.
The Tigers absolutely dominated their opponents in the finale to secure a deserving series sweep against the fourth placed American League Central Royals. It will be interesting to see if they can continue their impressive winning streak after the All Star
Break to have any chance of making it to the post season.
