Detroit Tigers thrash Kansas City Royals 9-3 – MLB Update
Detroit Tigers thrashed Kansas City Royals 9-3 at the Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan on Tuesday, May 1st in the opener of their two game series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season. Jim Leyland and company will be very pleased with the way they outplayed their rivals in crucial areas of the game.
Third baseman Miguel Cabrera provided the Tigers with a perfect start as he doubled to deep right to give his side team 1-0 lead. Prince Fielder, Cabrera and Brennan Boesch combined to snatch two more runs off a throwing error from Eric Hosmer.
Jhonny Peralta also displayed some high quality hitting skills to help the Tigers take an impassable 5-0 lead at the end of the first. The Royals fought back bravely in closing stages of the game but the runs deficit just proved too much for them.
Rick Porcello pitched decently as he allowed three runs and seven hits. The starter was 0-2 with a poor 15.26 ERA in his first two starts. However, after having a word with Tigers’ pitching coach Jeff Jones, he has shown great improvement in his pitching technique, improving his record to 2-2. Porcello will be looking to continue his good run to cement his place on Detroit’s pitching rotation.
"Jonesy just suggested something to slow down my delivery," Porcello said. "My biggest problem has been my tempo -- I'm getting out too quick and leaving pitches up in the zone. Today, we slowed everything down."
The Tigers experienced a huge dip in their form after making a decent start to their 2012 season campaign. Losing series to Texas Rangers, Seattle Mariners and New York Yankees, Detroit looked completely out of sorts in second half of April. The AL Central team will be hoping to take their excellent form into the next game to gain some sort of winning momentum before they face the likes of Yankees, Rangers and the Red Sox.
With their win over the Royals on Tuesday evening, the Tigers also improved their win percentage to .52 and it will be interesting to see if the American League Central Division champions can bring more consistency into their game play to defend their title.
