Detroit Tigers vs. San Francisco Giants World Series review – Part 2
After getting hammered by the San Francisco Giants in first two games of the World Series, the Detroit Tigers were looking to avenge their embarrassing defeats at Comerica Park in front of their home crowd.
Anibal Sanchez started Game 3 for the Tigers. Showing great composure and ability to handle pressure, the starting pitcher gave up just six hits and two runs in seven solid innings. Relief pitcher Joaquin Benoit and Phil Coke also displayed some top quality
throwing skills as they combined to toss up two scoreless innings but Detroit’ offence was unable to support the pitching rotation.
Giants scored back-to-back runs in the second inning and then held on to their slim lead to extend their series lead to 3-0. Starter Ryan Vogelsong had a memorable time on the mound as he gave up just five hits in five plus shut-out innings, laying the foundation
of an impressive Giants’ win in Game 3.
Relief pitchers Tim Lincecum and Sergio Romo continued the good work as they combined to pitch three perfect innings. Gregor Blanco tripled to deep right centre against Sanchez in the second inning to put Giants on the board. Shortstop Brandon Crawford continued
his excellent hitting form, earning an RBI single to centre in the second to double Giants’ lead 2-0.
Tigers, on the other hand, had several scoring opportunities but they were unable to make the most of them. Leyland looked extremely frustrated at the end of the contest as he was expecting his team to put up a solid fight at their home ballpark.
"I knew my stuff was pretty good," Vogelsong said. "I was really pumped up to be out there."
"I was just trying to make a pitch," Vogelsong said. "And the way we're playing defense, really just trying to get him to put a ball in play somewhere because I had a good feeling we were going to catch it if he did."
"We couldn't get the killer hit or the killer blow," Tigers’ manager Jim Leyland said.
"Well, you don't really have to tell them anything. They can count," Leyland said. "They're big guys, they know what the situation is."
Leyland and company showed great determination and mental toughness in Game 4 of the World Series but the Giants were destined to sweep their opponents. Third baseman Miguel Cabrera and Delmon Young smacked towering home-runs in the third and sixth inning
to help the Tigers force the game into the extra inning.
However, Giants’ second baseman Marco Scutaro ensured the series ended in four games as he drove in the tie breaking run.
Starter Max Scherzer showed nerves of steel early on as he gave up just three runs in six plus innings while striking-out eight batters. Relief pitcher Drew Smyly and Octavio Dotel also held the Giants scoreless in 1.2 innings.
For the Giants, starter Matt Cain showed the stuff he is capable of as he allowed just five hits in seven innings. With their win, the Giants also completed a memorable series sweep against the Tigers and claimed their second World Series title in just three
years.
Without a shadow of a doubt, the Tigers were the favourites to win the title but credit should be given to the Giants who played out of their skins to annihilate their opponents.
